Inside Arizona Prison Volunteer Stories: Dan Norcott
"Because of you, hope walks into prison" - ASM Volunteer Dan Norcott What would it feel like to walk into a prison and see a church? Not a building with stained glass and pews — but a visitation room filled with orange uniforms and open Bibles. The inmates and volunteers call it “Orange Church.” And every week, because of faithful supporters like you, church happens in one of the darkest places imaginable. Serving these men is one of the most powerful experiences of my life.

Setting Captives Free
September 2020 • Newsletter “ Along Side is fantastic. They’re doing so many things right. I volunteer with other ministries and not many have this much recovery programming. The regular sessions each week, the one-on-one mentorship is all very good, plus they’ve got some very smart, extremely biblically sound, and caring leadership.” Ruth has a passion for pouring into the lives of women and helping them experience freedom from the lies and regret that holds them hostage. What takes a 7-year-old in a Sunday school class ...
$60,000 Hope Alive Matching Challenge And turns her into a 32-year-old sitting in a prison cell? And once you’ve fallen that far ... how can you find your way back up? Hannah can tell you. She was that 7-year-old. She had, as she recalls today, “a pretty good childhood.” She grew up in church. In her teens, she was in the church youth group. “I had loving parents,” she says, “really strong in their faith.” But at 17, she rebelled. “Got involved in the wrong crowd, with lots o

Can Transformation Be Real?
March 2022 • Newsletter You might remember Chris from the cover of our September 2020 newsletter ; a giant of a man who fell in with the wrong crowd, who was involved in an armed robbery that ended with three people dead; the man who found Jesus on death row – and lived to tell about it. Back then, he claimed to be a new man. But was it genuine? Was the transformation he said he found, with Along Side’s help after 27 years behind bars, real? Spending just five minutes with Ch

From Wayward Father to Loving Dad
March 2022 • Newsletter From the start, it seemed like Daniel was set up to fail. At the tender age of twelve he was already abusing alcohol and marijuana. By thirteen, he was experimenting with methamphetamine. Addiction was a constant companion all the way into his late twenties. “I was doing the weekend warrior thing for years – partying and doing drugs where I could get them.” Even becoming a father in 2004 wasn’t enough to slow Daniel down. “ I was just lost in my addict

He killed. He ran. But this Christmas, Andre is saving lives...
December 2021 He killed a man, and he ran. Just 28 years old, he knew he was going to get life in prison. For three weeks, André evaded the police. But it couldn’t last. He spent more than 2 years in Pima County André wanted to live for God, but it was hard. The day he finally walked into court for his sentencing, he prepared for the worst. But he was stunned by what happened. It would be second-degree, not first-degree, murder. And his sentence would be “only” 12 years. You

JASON COULDN’T ESCAPE THE PRISON CYCLE. Then you offered a way out...
October 2021 Some of what happened to Jason, I don’t even want to tell you. To hear his whole story is heartbreaking. Born to heroin and meth addicts, his own father taught him to drink alcohol — starting when Jason was still in grade school. When Jason was staying with Grandma and his father came to visit, the little guy pleaded to come home. His father produced a six-pack and offered a cruel dare: Drink that, and I’ll take you home. Jason did it. But the trip home never las

The Authority to Change
September 2021 • Newsletter Since the time he was small, John has always had a problem with authority. “I didn’t want people telling me what to do . If I wanted to do it, if I felt like it was right… even if it was wrong, that’s what I was gonna push myself to do.” It’s an attitude that not only got John removed from multiple schools growing up; it got him kicked out of his own home by the time he was 15. Couchsurfing and selling drugs to get by, it wasn’t long before his

It happened to Pete Cano. He just got out of prison after 30 years inside.
June 2021 Think back 30 years: Where were you in June of 1991? Who were you? Can you imagine going away back then, detaching from the world, and emerging for the first time today — 30 years later? It happened to Pete Cano. He just got out of prison after 30 years inside. He’s got an uphill battle ahead, trying to rebuild his life outside of prison. But Pete isn’t alone. He has a friend. He has you. Your generous support for Along Side Ministries means you’ll be there for Pete

A Servant's Heart Never Fades
May 2021 • Newsletter Terri and Sandford White have a long history when it comes to serving others. After rescuing Terri from the streets and Sandford from a material lifestyle in their 20’s, God led them both to live out their faith in street ministries, nursing homes, and prisons across the U.S. during their 46 years of marriage. It was when they finally settled down in Arizona in 2017 that God’s call led them to Along Side Ministries. “We were very encouraged when we start

What We Do When We Fall
May 2021 • Newsletter When Kristen completed our recovery program in 2014, she was well on her way to forging a bright new future. “I had just completed four years of sobriety, the longest I had gone since my mom offered me meth when I was 12 years old. I had become a licensed health and life insurance agent, was living in graduate housing at ASM and doing pretty well.” Then she received a call that changed everything. From the time she was 4 years old to the time she was 9,

Getting Right With God
Anthony needed reconciliation and ASM was there! May 2021 • Newsletter For most of his life, Anthony has been angry with God. He blamed Him for the cancer that took his father, for the way it fractured his family, and later, for how it set his life on a path of destruction. “I dealt with the pain by doing drugs,” admits Anthony. “By the time I was in high school I was selling. That was my identity for a really long time. I was living my life dealing with childhood trauma. ”

When Loss Leads to Love Everlasting
God’s love and your support turn tragedy into hope! December 2020 • Newsletter It was over. Amanda caught her breath. As the tremendous pain began to subside, a tiny, glistening baby was slipped into her arms. Seeing her son for the first time, tears streamed down her face – but not because of the beauty of the moment. She knew what came next would break her heart. “It was the hardest thing I ever went through, to have my son and then have him immediately taken away. It broke

From Addict to Advocate, Sandie is Impacting Lives
December 2020 • Newsletter “If you’re an addict for a lot of years, you’ve probably messed your family over a few times. When they get to us, it’s their last hope .” Sandie doesn’t just speak from experience as a vital member of the Along Side staff, she speaks from personal experience. She was addicted once; she knows what it “If you’re an addict for a lot of years, you’ve probably messed your family over a few times. When they get to us, it’s their last hope.” “I prayed God

A Dealer Finds a Better Deal
December 2020 • Newsletter Some kids dream of becoming a firefighter or a policeman. Growing up in downtown Kansas City, Jereme wanted to become a drug dealer. “Not the violent kind that’s out there gang banging. I wanted to be the hippie kind of dealer that helps people… or at least what I thought was helping people out.” From the time he was 16 to well into his 30s, Jereme dedicated all his efforts to honing his craft. It led to fights at school, strife at home over marijua

If there ever was a Thanksgiving moment... This was it.
November 2020 Danny had plenty. His dad was military. His mom had a good job. They lived in Mesa. If you’d known them, you would have said, “Nice neighbors. That Danny, he’s a good kid.” And you would have been right. Danny never did drugs, never got involved in a gang, never committed a crime. Until ... graduation day. Like so many high schoolers, he “celebrated.” That day sowed the seeds of disaster into young Danny’s life. Yes, he went to church. He read the Bible. But he

When you mess up your second chance... then what?
October 2020 Sometimes, you need a second chance. Sometimes, a second chance isn’t enough. Or even a third. But here’s the beautiful truth: Jesus never gives up on you. And neither do we. Your support for Along Side Ministries saved Chrissy’s life ... even after she wrecked her second chance, her third chance, and her fourth, and ... Her life was a tragedy. Pregnant at 14, married at 15, she partied hard. Tending bar, she plunged into the bar scene. She had another child. Af
