There are many ways a person can volunteer with Along Side Ministries.  Where is your calling?

Jail Ministry

Preaching or Teaching (inside the jails)


Go to a specific jail and hold weekly or bi-monthly services to share the Gospel Message of Jesus Christ. This is a great evangelistic opportunity.




Bible Study Leaders (inside the jails)


Teach God’s word that is clear, relevant and applicable to their lives. Connect with inmates in ways that spur them on toward belief and application of God's Word.




One-on-one Visitation (inside the jails)


Meet a man or women in County Jail that requests a visit from someone in the church. This is perfect for the person who has the gift of evangelism.





Prison Ministry - Inside Prison

Preaching Pastor


  • Lead monthly church services in prison.
  • Prepare and deliver sermons to inmates, sharing the message of salvation and sanctification to the inmates.
  • Be clear and relevant about God’s Word in your preaching. Bringing hope to these men/women.
  • Inform inmates about Along Side Ministries
  • Counsel and pray with inmates as requested

Prison Pastor's serve once a month in the evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

At least a one-year commitment.




Bible Study Teacher


Teach the Word of God to inmates using the scriptures as your text.

  • Teach God’s Word that is clear, relevant and applicable to their lives.
  • Connect with inmates in ways that spur them on toward belief and application of God's Word.
  • Inform inmates about Along Side Ministries

Bible Study teachers serve 2-3 times a month in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

At least a one-year commitment




Mentor Ministry (inside & outside prison)


This is the greatest need we have for both the men and women coming out of prison.

  • Meet one on one with an inmate/mentee who has been selected for you on a regular basis in prison (at least twice a month)
  • Using the materials provided by Along Side Ministries:
    • Work with the mentee on developing Godly character
    • Teach them how cope with challenges and triggers once they are released.
    • Help them develop goals and an action plan for transition from prison to society.
    • Help them complete documentation and skills required for employment
    • Teach them basic money management and budgeting
    • Teach them how to develop healthy relationships with others

At least a 15-month commitment and could be longer.




Worship Leader


The worship leader works closely with the pastor in leading worship services in our prisons. Chose and lead worship songs that engage the inmates and support the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  • Work with the pastor(s) to provide cohesive worship experiences including new and traditional songs which enable the congregation to worship together.
  • Responsible for distributing and collecting the sheet music
  • Responsible for sound equipment and prison "Approved Equipment List" (staff assisted)
  • Connect with inmates in ways that spur them on toward belief and application of God's Word

Worship leaders serve a minimum of once a month in the evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

At least a one-year commitment.




Inside Helper - Bible Study (Assist ASM Bible Study teacher)


  • Take attendance at weekly Bible Study
  • Answer questions from inmates about Along Side Ministries
  • Distribute applications
  • Pray with inmates as requested
  • Be prepared to fill in for the Bible Study teacher in their absence.

Inside helpers serve weekly, bi-weekly or monthly in the evening from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

There is no set length of commitment for inside helpers.





Aftercare Ministry - Outside Prison

Outside Mentor (when needed)


Match up with a man or woman after being released to the Discipleship Training Center. To disciple and equip them to make a successful transition into society

  • Meet weekly

  • Use ASM material for transition process




Bible Study Teacher (for men or women)


Using the Bible, teach the Word of God to our men and women in transition from prison to society. These Bible studies take place at the Discipleship Training Center (DTC).

  • Verbally inform residents of what God's Word says in ways that hold interest.
  • Connect with residents in ways that spur them on toward belief and application of God's Word.
  • Counsel and pray with residents as necessary.

These are held once a month, or every two weeks. Bible Studies are scheduled on a night designated by the ASM Staff.

At least a one-year commitment.




To pray with the one you are sponsoring as they make this journey


  • Assist our men and women as they walk through the steps of C.R.
  • To connect weekly for the length of the class (12-16 wks)
  • To pray with the programmer as they make this journey




Meal Ministry


  • Organize a group to provide a meal for our men or women
  • Best nights are Wednesday or Thursday for the men and women
  • Can be a monthly commitment or quarterly or yearly based on your groups availability
  • Prepare meal at your home and deliver it to the DTCs and stay and enjoy the fellowship of the evening




Handyman


  • Looking for men/women to work on specific projects on our properties
  • Painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring or any other skills to assist the maintenance of ASM facilities




Put on a Grace Bag Project


This project impacts the hearts of our men and women their first day of release from prison.

  • Put together a gift bag for the inmates for their 1st day of release
  • Use a predetermined list of needed items from the ASM office
  • Great group or family project

Develop Your Church’s Ministry

Church Coordinator


Be the point person between ASM and your church. Be active in developing and maintaining a relationship with your church to educate and promote Along Side Ministries.

  • Develop and maintain church contact list
  • Obtain sponsorship for retreats for ASM programmers and graduates when needed for your church
  • Arrange and plan fund raisers for Along Side Ministries
  • Work with ASM Director for coordination and strategy

At least a one-year commitment.

Invite an ASM Man or Woman to Share their Testimony at Your Church

Host a Micro Event in your home


  • Invite 25-30 guests to hear the story of ASM.
  • Guests will be educated, inspired and experience ASM through the testimonies of staff, volunteers and our men and women.
  • 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. any night of the week.
  • No food or refreshments needed.





Graduate Program

Graduate Advocate


Major Objectives: Helping Along Side Graduates successfully complete their next step to independent living and spiritual growth.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Meet one on one with graduates on a weekly basis.
  • Complete needs assessment.
  • Provide training on Life Skills (i.e. Financial, Relationships, Boundaries)
  • Support ongoing spiritual accountability and growth.
  • Be the graduate’s advocate.
  • Help the graduate complete the Post-Graduation Transition plan.
  • Assist graduate in moving from graduate housing to independent living.

Qualifications:

  • Must be proficient in MS Office and Internet research.
  • Must belong to a church and be a born-again Christian.
  • Prior leadership experience either in church or in profession is desirable.
  • Must be sober and drug free.
  • Must have been out of prison and off Parole or Probation for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Must have 2 recommendations from church members or leaders.

Training and Preparation:

  • Attend Beyond the Bars Orientation.
  • Submit an application and obtain 2 references if this has not already been received.
  • Applicant must be interviewed and approved by Director.
  • Training and materials will be provided by Along Side Ministries.

Length of Commitment: The length of commitment will vary depending on the needs of the graduate.

Supervision: Graduate Advocate reports to ASM Program Director.
